The Focus Travel team were recently lucky to be invited to visit Holland America's new ship Konigsdam in her European home port of Amsterdam.
Konigsdam is the first of a new Pinnacle class ship, the largest in the HA fleet taking 2650 passengers. You certainly wouldn't know that many guests were onboard though as clever use of specific spaces means there are lots of discrete areas for guests.
Unlike the more 'jazz hands' approach of other US brands HA provide a calm, serence feel and a relaxed and grown approach to cruising - but with the opportunity to let your hair down if need be.
One of the foremost things about HA cruises is their appreciation that guests often want enrichment or learning opportunities on holiday. You may turn your brain off from day to day stresses and pressures but exercising your loves and hobbies.
For the food lover especially the The Culinary Arts Centre is an opportunity to flex your culinary skills aided by invited local chefs at destination ports. Utilising fresh, local, organic produce allows you to really get to grips with native cuisine.
We dined in Sel de Mer a truly outstanding seafood restaurant, where we hijacked the concept somewhat by having one of the tastiest steaks we'd ever had. Truly outstanding food in a convivial atmosphere.
This was followed by a visit to the all new theatre design with 270 degree led backdrop. It's great to see new technology and layouts being used in this way and a refreshing change for the theatre 'lite' layout of most other cruise ships. Shows promise to be more contemporary featuring Bowie, Elton john right through to current music - reflecting Holland America's ambition to reach out to a new more metropolitan clientele.
The external pool area has the now ubiquitous sliding roof but is designed much more as a theatre with a pool in it - this reflects the fact that this area at night becomes a hotbed of activity, films and shows with the BB Kings players a special treat.
Cabins are contemporary and well mannered with upper suites having coffee machines in room and large screen TV's in all cabins.
Konigsdam reflects Holland America's clear aim to become a player in the contemporary modern arena - appealing to the professional, the academic and those who wish to exercise their mind and body whilst enjoying superb food and drink and a great base for visiting unique itineraries - a welcome, surprising and quietly innovative addition to the cruise market.
